Sportsbook Odds Analysis

Sunday’s betting line opened with the Yankees going off as -181 favorites over the Red Sox as +171 underdogs. The Sportsbook total was set at 9.5 runs. New York is likely to close as an even bigger favorite on Monday with the Red Sox opting for a bullpen day on Sunday.

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Austin Brice is a career reliever with a 5.00 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP in 110 appearances from 2016 through this season. Brice will make his first career start on Sunday and is expected to only be used for an inning or two in what will be a bullpen day for the Red Sox.

James Paxton’s 2020 season got off to to a brutal start last Saturday as the lefty allowed five hits and three runs in just one inning of work against the Washington Nationals. Paxton enjoyed a solid first season with the Yankees last year sporting a 3.82 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP with 186 strikeouts in 150.2 innings pitched and will try to return to form in this one.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes

Boston has been outscored 10-3 through the first two games of this series and has now been outscored 46-26 over the team’s current 2-6 skid. The Red Sox entered this season with Chris Sale on the shelf for the entire year after getting Tommy John surgery in March, and now Eduardo Rodrigues is out for the rest of the season as well due to heart complications brought on by his recent bout with COVID-19.

With 16 teams set to make the posteason in 2020, the Red Sox still have plenty of time to turn things around at 3-6 SU. But early returns suggest that this season doesn’t appear to be going anywhere.

New York News & Notes

The Yankees on the other hand continue to live up to their preseason hype, improving on the league’s best record with a 5-2 win over Boston on Saturday to move to 6-1 SU. Aaron Judge wasted little time extending his personal home run streak to four straight games with a staggering 455-foot solo blast in the first inning off of Zack Godley. Gio Urshela followed that up with a grand slam in the second inning and those five runs were all the Yankees would need.

New York’s already stout bullpen is about to get even better with Aroldis Chapman cleared to return after testing negative for COVID-19 twice. The veteran flame-thrower had a 2.21 ERA and 37 saves with 85 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched last season.

Betting Pick: New York -181

Bring out the brooms. James Paxton should get back on track against this ice-cold Red Sox lineup and New York’s offensive swagger should continue against a depleted Red Sox bullpen.
