After being edged 3-2 last night by their hated rival, the Boston Red Sox are now tied with the New York Yankees in the AL East standings. The Red Sox will send Rick Porcello to the mound in tonight’s tilt while the Yankees will counter with Masahiro Tanaka. The Yanks are 7-2 SU in their last nine games with Tanaka on the bump and opened as a -167 fave to take the AL East lead.
Historically, Tanaka has been excellent at Yankee Stadium (30-14 SU, 3.35 ERA, 1.02 WHIP) but this season at home, he’s been awful with a 4.50 ERA, including two losses in April where he allowed 13 hits and eight earned runs. However, he may only need to contain the Red Sox offense as New York is mashing the ball, outscoring opponents 101-39 in its last 17 games and going 16-1 SU in those contests. With a 4.04 career ERA vs the Sox, it should not shock bettors to see Tanaka allow some runs. He yielded six runs on seven hits in five innings during a 10-7 victory vs Boston on April 10.
On the flip side, Rick Porcello has been outstanding in a rebound season after winning the Cy Young in 2016. Porcello is 5-0 with a 2.14 ERA this season and the last time he faced the Yankees, he was lights-out, allowing only two hits over seven scoreless innings. While he has regained his form, Porcello’s history vs the Yanks in the Bronx is not as spectacular as he is 1-4 SU with a 5.17 ERA and 22 earned runs in six starts. If bettors think he will buck this trend of ugly starts in the Big Apple, they’ll be happy to know that the Red Sox are 7-1 SU in the last eight games when Porcello takes the mound.
