After Brutal Start to the Season, are the Red Sox Finally Waking Up?

Mookie Betts (50) of the Red Sox trots to the dugout between innings during the MLB regular season game between the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays on April 19, 2019, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL.

The Boston Red Sox have been waiting for their dormant offense to wake up all season long, and it finally happened in a series-opening 6-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday thanks to Mookie Betts. The Red Sox will attempt to string together two wins in a row when they collide with the Rays in Florida tonight. Sportsbooks opened the Rays as -135 home favorites with a total of 8.

Red Sox vs Rays Game Center

Standout Stats

  • Betts went seven straight games without an extra base hit and was 2-for-23 in that span before leading off the sixth inning with a double and later hammering a go-ahead home run to lead Boston to the win. The triumph snapped a three-game slide for the BoSox.
  • The Rays are on their first losing streak of the season on the heels of yesterday’s loss and Thursday’s 6-5 setback to the Baltimore Orioles.
  • Rick Porcello is slated to start for the Red Sox. Porcello (0-3, 11.12 ERA) has struggled with his command and issued a total of 12 walks to go along with 22 hits in 11 1/3 innings over his first three outings.
  • Charlie Morton is scheduled to counter for the Rays. Morton (2-0, 2.18) has surrendered two or fewer runs in each of his first four outings with his new team since coming over from Houston.
  • Yesterday’s matchup continued a trend of OVERs when these teams clash in Florida. In Boston’s past five trips to Tropicana Field, the OVER is 4-1.

My best bet for Red Sox-Rays

OVER 8 runs

Despite yesterday’s solid showing, the Red Sox are simply too volatile to back on the moneyline right now. While I lean towards the Rays, I’m taking the OVER as my best bet. Porcello has been getting knocked around the park in each of his starts this season and the Rays should capitalize on his struggles to push this one OVER the total.
