Unleashing their newest weapon upon the baseball world, the Cubs will be favorites today when Jose Quintana makes his first start for the defending World Series champs as they go for the road sweep of the Orioles. The lefty came at a steep cost for the Northsiders but he should be an excellent complement to an already talented pitching staff.
Although his numbers this season don’t show it, Quintana (3.51 career ERA) is one of the best southpaws in baseball. Until 2017, the Colombian’s ERA had gone down every year and he managed to win 13 games for a bad team in 2016.
That said, the Orioles got to Quintana earlier this season, nailing him for four runs in just five innings of work and multiple guys in the O’s lineup have had a lot of success against him.
However bad he is in his first game, though, there’s a good chance Ubaldo Jimenez (4-4, 6.67 ERA) will be worse. The Dominican hurler has been on a fast and steady decline in his time with the O’s and he’s been on the hook for some awful results this season.
With Chicago’s offense starting to heat up, it’s likely Buck Showalter keeps a close eye on the bullpen this afternoon and I wouldn’t be surprised if Jimenez made an early exit. Baltimore has the worst starting pitching staff in baseball, objectively speaking, and Ubaldo might be the worst of the bunch.
