Snapping their offensive slump and returning to .500 with a 13-run outburst last night, the Cubs will attempt to wrap up their series against the Mets today with a series win. Left-hander Mike Montgomery (2.43 ERA) will take the hill for the Cubs in his second start of the season to face polarizing Mets’ hurler Matt Harvey (4-3, 5.02 ERA).
Although his stats don’t really show it, Harvey has been a little better of late and he’s coming off a decent five-inning performance in which he didn’t give up any runs against a decent Braves’ lineup. He went seven innings allowing no runs in his last appearance against the Cubs but that start came back in 2015, arguably Harvey’s best year as a pro.
His pitching opponent is essentially a stop-gap for the Cubs and he probably won’t be going deep in tonight’s game. Montgomery hasn’t lasted longer than four innings in a game since August of 2015 and he’ll be facing most of the guys in the Mets’ lineup for the first in his career.
With two pitchers going to the mound that could be batted around and with the Cubs’ offense heating back up, the trend that’s seen four of the last five games in this series go UNDER could start to regress in the other direction.
