The Chicago Cubs venture into the River City tonight to face the St. Louis Cardinals and coming off four straight losses, the Cubbies will send righty Jon Lester to the bump to get them back on the winning track. Lester got a win against the Cardinals lineup last month and sports a career 2.16 ERA in 15 starts vs St. Louis. Despite those factors, the Cubs are slight dogs to get the victory in the Lou.
The Cubs are trying to salvage a win vs their division rival after dropping the first two games of the series. Hitting for Chicago has dropped off a bit in May as the squad is only hitting .206 in five games and sits tied for second last in the NL in hits in that span. Offensively, the Cubs should be able to correct that and having Lester on the mound should help keep the Cardinals in check after they exploded for four runs in two innings vs Chicago’s bullpen last night. Lester has held the Cardinals to a collective .229 batting average in his career and has done well in night games early this season with a 2.66 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.
As for St. Louis, they’ll send Michael Wacha to the hill to try and sweep the series. Wacha has yet to pitch vs the Cubbies this season but over the last three seasons, he has been a dumpster fire with a 2-6 record in 11 starts, a bloated 7.90 ERA and Cubs batters are hitting .291 on him during that span. With bad news coming down that Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina will be headed to the DL, it could be a long night for Wacha.
