Lynn, White Sox Look To Continue Winning Ways

Lance Lynn will take the mound for the Chicago White Sox at home on Friday night.

On Thursday, The Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox hooked up off the field to complete a trade.

On Friday, the same two-teams will hook up again, this time on the field, for the first game of a three-game series in Chicago.  The Tribe have owned this head to head series of late.  Cleveland has won 12 of the last 17 games against the Sox.

  • Indians vs White Sox Matchup Report

Opening Odds Analysis

This line opened with the home team White Sox a heavy favorite at -210. Cleveland was paying out at +192. After some early money betting, the line has moved a little bit with Cleveland now down to +185.

The OVER/UNDER for this game opened at 8.5. The early money has moved the O/U line a little bit as well. The total is still 8.5 but the UNDER is now -115.

In their last seven games head-to-head, the OVER has paid out in five of those seven games.

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Cleveland is starting rookie right-hander J.C. Mejia. For the season, Mejia has just not been very good. Overall Mejia is 1-6 with a 7.52 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. On the road, he  has been even worse. The righty is 1-4 with an 8.34 ERA and 1.59 WHIP. Last time out, Mejia was knocked around by Tampa Bay for five earned runs in six innings.

Chicago counters with the veteran Lance Lynn. Lynn has been brilliant over 18 starts this year. The Chicago Ace is 10-3, with a 1.91 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 115 strike-outs over 103.2 innings pitched. At home, the big righty hurler has been even better. He is 6-2, with a 1.50 ERA and visiting teams are hitting just .169 against Lynn.

Indians News & Notes

Thursday was an off-day for Cleveland, who trail the division-leading White Sox by eight games in the AL Central. In their last game out, the Cleveland bats came alive, scoring seven times in a 7-2 win against the Cardinals.

Over their last nine games, the Indians are just 3-6 and now trail Oakland in the wild card race by 5.5 games, with Seattle, New York and Toronto also ahead of them in the standings. Cleveland is just 3-8 in their last 11 road games and against teams that are .500 or better, the Tribe are 21-33 for the season.

White Sox News & Notes

Thursday in Kansas City, the White Sox were held to just five-hits and Royals starter Carlos Hernandez pitched six-innings of shut-out ball. Chicago lost 5-0 and dropped three of their four games in K.C. Over their last eight games, the White Sox have been held to three-runs or fewer in seven of them.

The White Sox offense wasn’t at full strength on Thursday. Jose Abreu sat out yesterday’s game with a stiff neck and is listed as questionable for Friday’s game. Eloy Jimenez, who had only returned recently also sat out yesterday as well. Jimenez was removed Wednesday with groin tightness and is listed as questionable for today’s game.

Chicago did receive a boost from their front-office with some early trade deadline moves. The White Sox acquired 2B Cesar Hernandez from Cleveland to replace the injured Nick Madrigal, who is out for the rest of the season. They also bolstered the bullpen by trading for right-hander Ryan Tepera from their crosstown rivals, the Cubs.

Betting Pick: Under 8.5

The White Sox offense has been struggling of late and with Abreu and Jimenez both banged up and questionable for today’s game, I’m going to lean towards the under.  Mejia has obviously struggled this year for Cleveland and there is always the potential he gets hit hard again.

However, Lance Lynn at home has been dominant and I see know reason why he doesn’t shut-down the Tribe today. Take the UNDER at 8.5 in this one.
