Rockies Lean on Freeland to Steal Another Game in Atlanta

The Colorado Rockies continue to chase the Diamondbacks in the standings and will need to knock off the Atlanta Braves again tonight to shrink the deficit. The Rockies are 1.5 games back of the D-backs and will send Kyle Freeland to the bump with a 3.02 ERA in 24 starts this season. The Braves will counter with lefty Sean Newcomb, who twirled a gem vs the Rockies for a 4-0 win in April. Atlanta opened as -125 favorites to get back in the win column.

SHARK BITES
  • The Rockies are 7-1 SU in their last eight games with Kyle Freeland as the starter.
  • The Braves are 8-2 SU and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games at home.
  • The UNDER has hit in 11 of the Rockies’ last 13 games with Kyle Freeland as the starter.

Pitching Matchup May be a Toss-Up

The Rockies have their young lefty Kyle Freeland on the mound for this tilt and the southpaw has been solid since the start of July with a 2.41 ERA over his last eight starts while only giving up three or more runs in two of those games. It’s no coincidence that the hard-hitting Colorado lineup is 7-1 SU in its last eight games with Freeland as the starter. That being said, the lefty has been a bit of a mixed bag when pitching on the road as he owns a 3.89 ERA in 13 road starts and the Rockies are 6-7 SU in those games.

As for the Braves, they’ll turn to Sean Newcomb, who had a rough outing in his last turn in the rotation by allowing 12 hits and five runs but the Braves won in spite of him. With that win, Atlanta has won four straight games with him as the starter and in the previous three starts, he only allowed 10 hits and three runs over 20.2 innings of work. Bettors should note that when he faced the Rockies earlier this season, he limited them to five hits and no runs in a 4-0 victory.

Atlanta has Been Tough to Beat at Home

The Braves currently lead the NL East by 1.5 games and since the all-star break they rank in the top 10 in runs, hits, doubles, homers, RBIs, batting average and OPS. At home, the Braves have been taking care of business, winning eight of their last 10 at SunTrust Park while outscoring their competition 73-37. Runline bettors should also know they went 7-3 ATS in those games.

Kyle Freeland is an UNDER Machine

The total opened at 8.5 and bettors may want to consider the UNDER in this battle. The UNDER has hit in five of the Rockies’ last six games with an average combined score of 8 runs per game. That number shrinks with Kyle Freeland on the mound as the UNDER has hit in 11 of the Rockies’ last 13 games when he has gotten the call with an average combined score of 7.23 runs per game.
