Houston Astros Marwin Gonzalez strikes out on August 14, 2018 at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.

Astros Have Lost Nine Straight At Home, Yet Oddsmakers Still Love Them

Yeah, I’m gonna do it: Houston, we have a problem. The banged-up Astros are winless at home since July 14, a stretch of nine games. In fact, they’ve lost 12 of their last 15 home games in total. Despite this, the Astros open as more than a -200 favorite against one of the better teams in baseball, the Colorado Rockies. Colorado has won six of its last nine and four straight entering play tonight in Houston.

SHARK BITES
  • The Astros are 0-9 SU in their last nine games at home with an average losing margin of 3.11.
  • Houston is hitting .197 with a .572 OPS at home since the break.
  • The Rockies are 34-12 ATS in their last 46 games as road underdogs.

Who Holds the Starting Pitching Edge Tonight?

AJ Hinch will turn to Gerrit Cole (10-5, 2.75 ERA, 0.99 WHIP) to try to stop the bleeding in the series finale against the Rockies. Cole has lost his last three starts since beating the Rockies on July 24 at Coors Field. In the three losses, he has an ERA 4.26 while the Astros have scored just four runs total. Against Colorado in July, Cole tossed 6.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits, striking out nine batters in the process. The game went to extra innings before the Astros put up a six spot in the top of the 10th.

Tyler Anderson (6-4, 3.94 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) will go head-to-head with Cole for the second time in three weeks. In the game on July 24, Anderson pitched into the eighth inning and allowed just one earned run on three hits, keeping the Houston bats quiet. Since June 29, his ERA is 2.81 and his WHIP is 1.01. He’s been the losing pitcher just once since June 23, however, the Rockies have lost four of the last five games he’s started.

Astros Falling to Earth Like a Meteor

Houston, once -1600 odds to win the AL West, has seen that number cut in half as the team is now -850 at Sportsbook to claim the division. Even still, those odds are remarkable considering their lead in the division is just one game over Oakland with a head-to-head series set for this weekend.

The Astros, plagued by injuries to many of their superstars, are hitting .197 at home since the all-star break. Their home OPS during that stretch is .572. Both numbers are worst in the American League. Meanwhile, the Baltimore Orioles’ home OPS since the break is .915. Breathe that one in for a second.

Totals Bettors Should Know…

The run total opened at 7.5 for tonight’s game. The OVER has hit in six of Gerrit Cole’s last eight home starts with an average combined score of 9.63. Likewise, the OVER has hit in Tyler Anderson’s last three starts with an average combined score of 11.33. In the three head-to-head games the teams have played this season, the UNDER has hit twice and one game pushed.
