Outscored 23-5 in the first two games, the Rockies will look to close out their series with the Mets on a positive note when they send Jeff Hoffman (4-1, 4.15 ERA) to the bump to meet Steven Matz (2-2, 3.05 ERA). Both hurlers are coming off rocky starts but it’s the home team that’s been pegged as the favorite with Hoffman’s numbers taking a nosedive the last month.
That said, Hoffman has been terrific away from Coors Field, a common story for Rockies pitchers, and with a 3-0 record and a 1.67 ERA in four road starts this season, he should give the Rox a good chance to salvage something from this series.
His counterpart tonight will take the mound trying to forget about his last start. Matz gave up five earned runs in that contest with the Cardinals after shutting out his two previous opponents. When he’s on, the southpaw has some of the best stuff in baseball but he was given the gears the last time he faced this lineup and he could be in trouble today.
It’s true that the Rockies haven’t been getting it done as road dogs but given the value they’re offering this afternoon, it seems like a no-brainer.
