The Colorado Rockies have been downright abysmal at Coors Field this season, going 11-19 at home and dropping their last seven in Denver. Luckily for the Rockies, they open a six-game road trip when they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies on Tuesday. Compared to their dreadful home record, the Rockies are a stellar 21-14 on the road this season.
The Rockies have won just two of their last 10 games and their pitching has been a big reason why. That 10-game span has seen the Rockies post a combined 7.52 ERA while surrendering 19 home runs. Seven of those games were at Coors Field, which does skew the numbers slightly upward, but Colorado also posted a collective 4.75 ERA in a three-game set in Cincinnati in that span as well.
Jon Gray will get the start for the Rockies in this one, which would inspire confidence if it was last season but not so much during this campaign. Gray has exhibited mechanical problems – as well as some mental issues – this season, posting a 5.66 ERA in his 13 starts. The 26-year-old righty has only gotten worse, as he has an 8.49 ERA while allowing opponents to hit .355 during his past five outings.
Countering Gray will be Phillies ace Aaron Nola. Nola has burst onto the scene this season, allowing two or fewer earned runs in 10 of his 13 starts. The right-hander has been spectacular at Citizens Bank Park this season with a 1.94 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in six starts at home – all of which were Phillies victories.
