Tigers not finding much success behind Liriano

The Tigers hand the ball to Francisco Liriano (3-7, 4.42 ERA), looking to put an end to a three-game losing slide. There haven’t been too many bright spots for the lefty this season, as Detroit is just 6-12 SU when he makes a start and three of those wins came in April. The Dominican Republic native has kept his club in games, allowing three or fewer runs in 15 of his 18 starts, but according to our pitcher run support page, Liriano is being provided with an average of 4.06 runs per game.

The 34-year-old has made just one appearance against the Twins this season and it came last week. Liriano hurled five innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, and was saddled with a 4-3 loss. Over his career, Liriano’s clubs are 4-2 SU when he takes the mound against Minnesota but he sports an elevated 5.58 ERA in those outings.

The Numbers aren’t Pretty but Twins are winning with Santana

Making just his fifth trip to the mound this season is Ervin Santana (0-1, 6.53 ERA). The 35-year-old spent most of the season on the disabled list following surgery on his throwing hand. Since his return on July 25, the Twins are 3-1 SU when he’s on the mound, although Santana has allowed three or more earned runs in each outing and has yet to pitch into the seventh inning. In addition, the Dominican Republic native has given up 13 hits in just 9.2 innings at Target Field in 2018 as opposing batters are hitting .317 against him.

Similar to Liriano, Santana is coming off a loss against the Tigers in his last appearance. The righty completed six innings for the first time this year but was tagged for five earned runs on four hits in a 5-3 loss in that start. Santana has been good against Detroit over his 23 career starts vs the club as his teams have gone 14-9 SU and he has an impressive 3.56 ERA.
