MLB Expert Picks Today: Go A's Go

Our MLB expert picks are hot and ready after the All-Star Break, so let's pick a few winners.

With my MLB expert picks today, I'm taking the Mets and starter David Peterson to defeat the lowly Marlins, plus I'm happily backing the underdog A's vs the Astros. Here are my two MLB picks for July 22nd:

MLB Expert Pick Today: Mets (-165) vs Marlins

New York vs Miami Odds - Game Time: 6:40 pm ET

Boy, you'll bet you picked the Mets to make the playoffs at +300 before the season started. While I'm not ready to crown that pick success just yet, it sure looks like the Amazins have a fighting chance at October baseball.

Things are better lately. The club is 6-4 SU in its last 10 and now owns a +10 run differential, while the offense and pitching function in harmony. For example, the Mets have four hitters (Mark Vientos, Francisco Alvarez, Francisco Lindor, and Brandon Nimmo) all with an OPS above .850 in the last month. The team is producing in line with its potential, hence the Mets' 26-15 SU record since June began.

The kicker vs the Marlins begins with fair ML odds. The Fish suck, and anything south of -200 will do the trick for me. More importantly, lefty David Peterson starts for New York. The 28-year-old has been a godsend on the hill, posting a 3.09 ERA in eight starts. The Mets have also won seven of Peterson's eight starts (including seven straight), making him a decently profitable option (+$505 if you bet $100 on each of his starts).

MLB Expert Pick Today: A's (+125) vs Astros

Houston vs Oakland Odds - Game Time: 9:40 pm ET

I'm so happy I finally got a chance to back the A's. And this matchup vs the surging Astros isn't actually as disastrous as you might think.

Firstly, Astros righty Spencer Arighetti is on the hill. This guy is as close to an automatic fade as it gets. The Astros are 7-10 SU when Arrighetti starts, and the rookie is in the top 20 among baseball's least profitable pitchers at -$515 (assuming you bet $100 on every start). The longball (1.2 HR/9) is Arrighetti's weakness, and that lines up with the A's strength of late. Brent Rooker (1.214 OPS) and Lawrence Butler (1.080) have mashed vs RHPs in the last month, toting a slugging percentage over .700.

On top of it all, A's starter Hogan Harris has a strong track record vs this Astros lineup, allowing just four hits (all singles) in 32 at-bats vs active Houston hitters.
