Josh Reddick #22 and teammate Carlos Correa #1 of the Houston Astros celebrate after beating the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on May 17, 2019 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Battle of Defending World Series Champs on Deck at Fenway

The Houston Astros emerged victorious in a battle of the last two World Series champions in a 3-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday, but the Red Sox will be looking to get some redemption tonight. Sportsbooks opened the Astros as slight -109 road favorites with a total of 10.5.

Standout Stats

  • Astros reliever Ryan Pressly set a major league record with his 39th consecutive scoreless appearance in the eighth inning and Roberto Osuna battled through a shaky ninth inning to notch his 11th save.
  • The Red Sox had won 12 of 15 games entering the series but went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base in the loss.
  • Corbin Martin is slated to get the start for the ‘Stros. Martin (1-0, 3.38 ERA) made his major league debut against Texas last Sunday and allowed two runs on three hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings of work to earn the win.
  • Hector Velazquez will counter for the Astros. Velazquez (1-2, 3.95) will be making his seventh start among 12 appearances and went a season-high five innings in a victory over Seattle on Sunday, allowing two runs on two hits. The hurler owns a 4.19 ERA as a starter in 2019.
  • While yesterday’s game went UNDER, these teams have a history of going OVER in Beantown. In the past 21 meetings between the Red Sox and Astros in Boston, the OVER is 15-6.

My best bet for Astros-Red Sox

Red Sox moneyline

These teams are incredibly evenly matched and are playing the part of the defending World Series champions right now, but I’m on the Red Sox to bounce back in the second game of the series and pick up a win tonight.

With Martin making only his second career start, I expect the Red Sox to take advantage of the rookie and get back on track offensively at Fenway Park.

The OVER is 15-6 in the last 21 meetings between the Red Sox and Astros in Boston. The Astros are 1-4 in the last five meetings with the Red Sox. The OVER is 5-1 in the Red Sox' last six games.home
