  • The Houston Astros (36-27) will look to snap their losing skid when they take on the Cleveland Guardians (29-33) for the second meeting of a three-game set on Saturday at Progressive Field. Houston has dropped four straight contests while Cleveland enters play on a three-game win streak.

    The Guardians opened as the home favorite at -141 on the moneyline with the total set at 8 runs. The UNDER is 5-2 in the last seven meetings between the two teams in Cleveland and 12-6 in the Guardians’ last 18 games. Meanwhile, Houston is 14-6 in its last 20 contests versus Cleveland.

    Starting Pitcher Report: Astros  

    J.P. France (1-1) will make his seventh start of the season for Houston coming off one of his best outings of the year. The right-hander scattered three hits and one earned run over seven innings of work against the Los Angeles Angels on June 4. 

    France has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his six appearances while pitching through the fifth inning in all but one of those outings.

    He owns a 3.44 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP over 34 innings.

    Starting Pitcher Report: Guardians 

    Triston McKenzie (0-0) is set to make just his second start of the season after suffering a teres major strain that kept him out until just last weekend. McKenzie threw five scoreless innings against the Twins in his first appearance of the year on June 4, holding them to just one hit while striking out 10.

    The right-hander posted a 2.96 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP through 191.1 innings in 2022.

    The Keys to Victory: Astros

    The Astros have dropped four straight and five of six due to one thing: a lack of offense. Houston obviously has plenty of sluggers in the lineup but they’ve mostly gone cold, with the Astros averaging just three runs per game over their last five losses.

    A couple of hitters have still been productive for Houston, though, as Yordan Alvarez (3 HR, 7 RBI), Alex Bregman (2 HR, 6 RBI) have averaged at least one RBI per game over the last week. If the Astros are going to snap their skid, they’ll need those two to lead the charge again.

    The Keys to Victory: Guardians

    The Guardians, on the other hand, have been heating up at the plate, scoring 10 runs in back-to-back outings and averaging 8.33 runs per game over their three-game win streak.

    Both Jose Ramirez (4 HR, 7 RBI) and Will Brennan (2 HR, 7 RBI) have been especially hot over the last week, with the former recording three homers and five RBI in Houston’s 10-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. 

    Although McKenzie looked great in his first start of the season, it’s tough to predict what he’ll give the Guardians tonight, so another big night from Ramirez or Brennan could give them the edge they need.
