Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitches in the first inning of a game

Ohtani Back On The Mound After Extended Break

Mike Scioscia decided to give two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani a break from the mound but the Japanese righty will be back on the hill for the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. Ohtani, who has not pitched since May 20, has found his groove from the bump recently, posting a 2.25 ERA with 26 strikeouts across his past three starts. The Angels will hope Ohtani keeps rolling when they continue their four-game series with the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

SHARK BITES
  • Mike Fiers has surrendered 9 HRs in his last 6 starts.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 12 of the Angels’ last 17 games against the Tigers.
  • The Tigers are 10-4 SU and 11-3 ATS in their last 14 games as home underdogs.

Ohtani gets the luxury of facing a Tigers offense that has struggled to score runs this season. Despite sitting seventh in the MLB in batting average, Detroit is averaging 4.2 runs per game – good for 20th in the junior circuit. The Tigers continually fail to plate their runners, as they strand the third-most runners in scoring position in the MLB.

The Tigers will turn to Fiers on the bump Wednesday. The 32-year-old righty has been mediocre this season, posting a 4.78 ERA with a 1.33 WHIP overall. Fiers has struggled in his two most recent starts, allowing 15 hits and eight earned runs in 10.2 innings of work. In addition, the Tigers will almost certainly need a long outing from him on Wednesday with the bullpen pitching the bulk of Tuesday’s game and Thursday’s scheduled starter Francisco Liriano heading to the DL.

Detroit fans may be more than a little concerned considering Fiers’ propensity for giving up home runs – he has yielded nine dingers over his past six starts. That is especially true considering the Angels are fourth in baseball in home runs and rocked the Tigers for four long balls on Tuesday.
