Opening Odds Analysis

Los Angeles opened as a -163 underdog, but early action on the Rays drove the line down to Los Angeles -150. The Rays are now going off at +140 to pull off another upset in Game 3. The total has remained steady at 7.5 runs even though each of the first two games in this series went OVER the posted total.

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Charlie Morton stopped the Houston Astros’ comeback in its tracks with 5.2 shutout innings in Game 7 of the ALCS, allowing only two hits and one walk in a tidy 66-pitch performance. Morton now owns a microscopic 0.57 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP this postseason and has led the Rays to a 5-0 record in his five career postseason starts in Tampa Bay.

Walker Buehler struggled with control issues through his first three starts of the postseason with 11 walks in 13 innings pitched. But in Game 6 of the NLCS against the Atlanta Braves, Buehler buckled down and threw six shutout innings with no walks in Los Angeles’s 3-1 win. Even with the walk trouble, he has still recorded a 1.89 ERA this postseason. The Dodgers are 9-1 in his last 10 starts.

Los Angeles News & Notes

Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May were valuable members of the Dodgers’ starting rotation this season. But neither of these young pitchers had their best stuff in Game 2 as the Rays jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first five innings on Wednesday night. Some fans and baseball pundits criticized Dave Roberts for not starting Walker Buehler on short rest in Game 2, but Roberts could get the last laugh if Buehler is able to outduel Charlie Morton in Friday’s game.

Corey Seager continued his impressive postseason with two hits and a solo home run in the loss. The Dodgers slugger is batting .302 with 15 runs, seven home runs and 16 RBIs through the team’s first 14 playoff games.

Tampa Bay News & Notes

After scoring only 3.1 runs per game over their previous 10 games, including an 8-3 loss in Game 1 of the World Series, the Rays finally got a much-needed offensive outburst in Game 2.

Brandon Lowe entered Wednesday night’s game batting .107 with four runs, one home run and two RBIs this postseason, but he broke out of his slump with two home runs and three RBIs in Tampa Bay’s 6-4 win.

Tampa Bay is 2-4 over its last six games and has allowed 4.83 runs per game over that stretch. The Rays had allowed only 1.5 runs per game with a 4-0 record over their previous four games.

Betting Pick: Tampa Bay +140

This is a virtual must-win game for the Rays with Charlie Morton on the mound. Los Angeles continues to have the clear edge on offense in this series, but it’s tough to pass on a pitcher pitching as well as Morton is at such a nice price.
