Completing an impressive five-out save last night, Aroldis Chapman helped the Yankees break the ice against the Twins and stay within three games of the Red Sox in the AL East race. The Yanks, 12-4 straight up in their last 16 games, are cruising into the playoffs and they’ll be big faves on Tuesday with an interesting pitching matchup on the docket.
One of the best young hurlers in the game, Jose Berrios (12-7, 3.84 ERA) hasn’t quite figured out how to get results on the road as yet. He owns a 5.14 ERA in 13 starts away from the Target Center and he’s about to be introduced to Yankee Stadium – maybe the most lethal park in baseball for right-handed pitchers.
He did shut the Yankees down when he faced them back in July but since then, he’s been erratic at best.
CC Sabathia (11-5, 3.85 ERA), Berrios’ polar opposite at 37 years of age, goes for the Yanks tonight coming off a decent outing in which he was asked to throw just 4.1 innings. It’s likely he won’t be asked to do much more tonight and if he can limit the Twinkies to two or three runs, the Yanks will be in good shape.
