Sportsbook Odds

The Yankees opened as the road favorite at -156 on the moneyline with the Red Sox coming in at +120 at home. The total was set at 9.5 runs with the OVER going 7-1 in the last eight meetings between the two clubs. New York is 12-6 in the last 18 matchups against Boston, suggesting that the visitors should have the edge in your Yankees vs Red Sox prediction.

Starting Pitchers

Kutter Crawford (3-4) had a tough go his last time out as he gave up five hits and five earned runs through five innings of work against the Kansas City Royals on August 7. The Red Sox starter had been solid in his prior two outings, though, allowing just one run in each contest. The right-hander has a 4.30 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP in 58.2 innings.

Frankie Montas (4-9) was also rocked in his last appearance, giving up five hits and six earned runs to the St. Louis Cardinals on August 7, though he was fortunate to come away with a no-decision. Montas, who has just one win in his last seven starts, owns a 3.59 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP through 107.2 innings this season.

Yankees Lose Again In Extra Innings

The Yankees lost yet again on Friday as they blew a late lead to the Red Sox in the series opener, ultimately falling 3-2 in extra innings. Anthony Rizzo got New York on the board in the first inning before Aaron Judge hit his 46th homer of the season to put the Yanks up 2-0 in the third. Boston fought back, though, as J.D. Martinez hit the game-tying single in the ninth to force extras before Tommy Pham walked it off in the 10th to complete the comeback.

Everything seems to be going wrong for the Yankees, who have lost three straight contests by one run with two of those defeats coming in extra innings. The usually explosive offense has dried up for the Bronx Bombers, who are scoring just 3.25 runs per game in their last eight losses, down from their season mark of 5.28 which ranks second in the majors.

Martinez Comes Up Clutch As Eovaldi Is Solid Over Six

J.D. Martinez played the hero for the Red Sox on Friday as he notched three hits and two RBI to lead the comeback charge. Nathan Eovaldi gave up eight hits over six innings but held the Yankees to just two earned runs, allowing his club to stay in the ballgame.

The Red Sox could be getting some reinforcements in the near future as both Kike Hernandez and Trevor Story are nearing returns to the lineup. Hernandez, who’s been out with a hip flexor strain since early June, is expected to rejoin the club next week. Story, who suffered a fracture in his wrist in mid-July, will start taking batting practice during the team’s next road trip and could return after a rehab assignment.

Yankees vs Red Sox Picks & Insights

Yankees: Keys To Victory

With Giancarlo Stanton still recovering from an Achilles injury, the Yankees need to find a way to reignite their offense. Judge has been leading the way with four homers and nine RBI in August while Josh Donaldson (2 HR, 8 RBI) has also been good but it falls off from there. New York will need to get more production throughout the lineup if it’s going to get back to winning ways.

Red Sox: Keys To Victory

The key for Boston in the series opener was limiting New York’s offense and that should be the plan again in Saturday’s matchup. While Crawford was poor in his last start, he’s been pretty solid for the Red Sox since making the switch to the rotation in June, sporting a 2.72 ERA over his prior eight appearances. If Crawford can pitch up to his usual standard, Boston should come out on top again.
