Betting Preview: New York Yankees vs Houston Astros

New York Yankees vs Houston Astros Game 6 ALCS

The Yankees offense came alive, if only for one inning, against Justin Verlander in Game 5. Will the total of 9 runs will be challenged in Game 6, as both managers are skipping using proven starters to go with bullpen-heavy games?

Opening Odds Analysis

Houston has been formidable at home and the Yankees have scored more than two runs in an inning just once in their 46 offensive innings this series. So it’s understandable that the Astros are favored, even in a bullpen game. The total opened at nine, though the under has been prevalent throughout this series.

New York News & Notes

After losing Game 4 in embarrassing fashion, the Yankees had to keep their season alive by beating Cy Young candidate Justin Verlander.

New York also had to overcome three straight games of failing to get a key hit when needed, and the Yankees wasted no time getting back on track. The Yankees hit two home runs in a four-run first-inning, while James Paxton delivered his best playoff start yet as New York won 4-1.

The Yankees are going to use a bullpen game for Saturday’s contest, which comes at a convenient time: New York managed to rest some of his key relievers, including the versatile Chad Green, while Zack Britton was the only bullpen piece to throw more than 9 pitches in Game 4.

Manager Aaron Boone has his trusted relievers, but he will need to play matchups to at least get to the fifth inning. He hasn’t named who his opener will be, but look for him to use every arm in his bullpen as he gets to Green and co. as soon as possible.

Houston News & Notes

The Astros felt pretty good heading into Game 5, as they held 3-1 series lead, with Justin Verlander pitching Game 5 to close out the series. Verlander and the Astros allowed one hit after the first inning, but they gave up four runs in that initial frame as they fell 4-1.

While that plan came up short, manager A.J. Hinch still has one competitive advantage remaining: one of the two potential remaining games will be started by Cy Young favorite Gerrit Cole.

Hinch said after the game that he will save Cole for a possible Game 7 (or Game 1 of the World Series), opting to match the Yankees with a bullpen game. Houston will be handing the ball to rookie Jose Urquidy, who was originally tabbed to start Game 4 before it was postponed.

Betting Pick: UNDER 9

Two bullpen games mean optimal matchups for each team. This plan produced low scores in the Houston-Tampa series, so I expect more of the same here.
