Jacob deGrom #48 of the New York Mets pitches against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on June 18, 2018 in Denver, Colorado.

deGrom Faces A Stiff Test in the Bronx

The Yankees and the Mets cap off their season series on Sunday Night Baseball and that will be just fine with the home team. The lowly Mets are 4-1 ATS through five games vs their cross-town rivals this year and although the Yankees lead the series 3-2, nothing has come easy.

Degrom Auditioning For contending teams?

Jacob deGrom has heard his name swirling in trade rumors and will have no bigger stage to audition on than on national tv against the Evil Empire. deGrom has been nearly unhittable in July giving up just one earned run in back-to-back eight-inning appearances. His July WHIP is 0.69 and his July ERA is 0.56. deGrom leads the majors in ERA at 1.68 and is the only starter to have an ERA below 2.00.

Masahiro Tanaka (7-2, 4.54 ERA) has been no slouch himself, so bettors can expect a pitching duel tonight. Tanaka has not been the losing pitcher in his last 11 starts with the Yankees going 8-3 SU in those games. The Japanese pitcher missed a month on the DL from June 8 to July 10 and the Yankees have lost both of his starts since he returned.

deGrom and Tanaka went head to head on June 8 at Citi Field, Tanaka’s last start before the stint on the DL, and the Yankees won 4-1 with the total hitting the UNDER.

Yankees Offense is the Best in the Majors

The Yankees, to use a well over-worn phrase, have a veritable murderers’ row of guys they can trot to the plate. The Bombers are hitting better than their yearly average in July, slashing .281/.355/.503 with a team OPS of .858. They’ve swatted 31 home runs in 17 games, scoring 99 runs.

As many pundits expected at the beginning of the year, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are crushing baseballs out of the park at an impressive clip. Judge has 26 home runs and 61 RBIs while Stanton has 23 home runs and 57 RBIs. It’s an all or nothing approach, however, as they are fourth and fifth respectively in the majors with 132 and 131 strikeouts.

Jacob deGrom is 10th in the majors with 10.68 strikeouts per nine innings.

OddsShark’s Super Computer Predicts the Total will go UNDER

The average combined score in Jacob deGrom’s last 15 starts is 6.4. Only three other times this year has a deGrom start had an Sportsbook total of 8 or more.

Masahiro Tanaka has the second-best run support in the league at 6.13 runs per game. Only Jon Lester gets more run support in his starts. Despite this, the Yankees are 10-5 SU in Tanaka’s 15 starts in 2018, although that number looked a lot better at 10-3 before he went on the DL.

So, the question for totals bettors tonight will be: Can Jacob deGrom keep the Yankees’ bats and Tanaka’s run support low enough to hit the UNDER, or will the Bronx Bombers live up to their name?
