2025 Mets Season Preview & Odds: Expectations For Soto

The Mets are all the rage in Major League Baseball.

Buttressed by the deep pockets of billionaire owner Steve Cohen, New York unleashed a spending spree of epic proportions. Juan Soto ($765 M), signed this offseason, was the crown jewel. The club also re-upped with Sean Manaea and Pete Alonso, while adding other pieces like Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes. Now the Mets are top-five on the World Series odds board.

In this 2025 Mets season preview, I’ll explore the latest odds, highlight key matchups, and uncover the best bets for the team this year.

The Mets are a fine value pick to win the World Series. If you think on it, the Yanks added Soto via trade before 2024 and found themselves in the World Series. New York now plants Soto in a batting order alongside Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and Mark Vientos.

That said, I see a much more realistic outcome for Mets bettors this year: to win the NL East at +185. Rather than wagering on the Mets to face the Dodgers or top AL teams in the World Series, a divisional bet provides more favorable odds and a significantly higher chance of paying off. For this, the Mets must simply beat out the Braves (+140) and Phillies (+185), who took some personnel losses this offseason.

The Braves lost Max Fried and Charlie Morton via free agency, while the Phillies lost some bullpen depth in Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez. Not to mention, this could finally be the year Philly's aging core of Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber finally take a big step backward.

This is a clear OVER bet for me since I'm sticking to my theory that the Mets win the NL East in 2025. The club won 89 games last year, relying heavily on a 40-27 second-half surge to get them securely in the playoffs.

The bullpen was the team’s Achilles heel in critical moments, but the Mets have tackled that weakness by signing A.J. Minter and re-signing Ryne Stanek. Interestingly, the team plans to transition Clay Holmes into a starting role in 2025. If that experiment falters, the sinkerballing right-hander will undoubtedly be a valuable addition back in the bullpen.

The 2025 Mets are better than last year and can win 92 games.

-270 for a futures bet is lame, but it's fair value as far as the actual projected likelihood of New York making the postseason. You can dump multiple units into this chalky futures bet if you're a crazy high roller.

Soto was fantastic last season with the Yankees, crushing 41 homers, driving in 109 RBIs, and finishing with a .989 OPS. By all means, he deserved his spot as the third-place AL MVP candidate. He deserves the second-place spot on the 2025 NL MVP odds board, though I wouldn't lay that bet during the pre-season.

There will be lots of noise about how Soto's shift from Yankee Stadium to Citi Field impacts his offensive numbers. I think that talk is overrated, as Yankee Stadium played at a 103 Park Factor last year (3% above average for hitters), while Citi played at 99 (1% below average). I think Soto could repeat but I'd recommend waiting through the first weeks of the season.

Very quickly, I'd suggest staying away from any Mets pitchers for NL Cy Young. Manaea will never win the Cy Young as long as I draw breath, and Kodai Senga will struggle to stay healthy.
