Find out in our Yankees vs Cardinals prediction.
Yankees vs Cardinals Odds & Analysis
The Yankees opened as the road favorite at -141 on the moneyline with the Cardinals getting +130 at home. The total was set at 8.5 runs with the UNDER going 7-3 in the last 10 meetings between the two clubs. New York has come out on top in five of the last six meetings against St. Louis, giving the visitors a clear edge in our Yankees vs Cardinals prediction.
Dakota Hudson (6-6) will take the mound for St. Louis looking to claim his first win since June 28. The right-hander last pitched on July 30 against the Washington Nationals when he took a no-decision after allowing four hits and two earned runs over 4.1 innings. Hudson has a 4.10 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP over 101 innings this season.
Nestor Cortes (9-3) will try to become the second Yankees pitcher to reach the 10-win mark this season when he gets the ball Friday. The southpaw picked up a win in his last start on July 30 against the Kansas City Royals, scattering five hits and two earned runs over five innings. Cortes owns a 2.53 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP over 106.2 innings.
Yankees Lose To Mariners After First-Inning Meltdown
The Yankees dropped their second straight game to the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, falling by a score of 7-3. The Mariners rocked Yanks starter Gerrit Cole for six runs on three homers in the first inning and never looked back. Cole ended up going six innings, giving up seven hits and six earned runs to take his second loss in three starts.
New York has been pretty inconsistent so far in the second half, going 6-8 since the all-star break. Pitching has been the club’s Achilles heel of late as they’ve allowed at least seven runs in each of their last three losses. The good news going into Friday’s matchup is that Cortes hasn’t allowed more than four runs in a game this season and has given up just three earned runs over his last three starts combined – a total of 18 innings.
Cardinals Double-Dip Against Cubs On Thursday
The Cardinals picked up two wins Thursday, sweeping the Chicago Cubs 4-3 and 7-2 in a doubleheader. Trailing 3-0 in the first game, St. Louis tied it up in the seventh before Lars Nootbaar hit a walk-off single in the ninth to nab the victory. The second matchup was a bit less dramatic but Jose Quintana, who was acquired at the trade deadline, did earn his first win with the club in his debut.
Paul Goldschmidt continued his impressive run as he hit a solo homer in Thursday’s opening game. The Cardinals slugger is now up to 26 homers and 82 RBIs on the season, collecting seven home runs and knocking in 15 runs over his last 10 games. Nolan Arenado also hit a two-run shot in the second game of the doubleheader – his third homer in five outings.
Yankees vs Cardinals Pick & Insights
Yankees: Keys To Victory
The Yankees are in desperate need of a strong pitching performance, especially coming up against a Cardinals squad that’s averaging 5.71 runs per game over its last seven contests. If Cortes can continue his hot run of form, New York may be able to snap St. Louis’ streak.
Cardinals: Keys To Victory
Everything seems to be clicking for the Cardinals of late: they picked up back-to-back shutout wins earlier this week and they’re outscoring opponents 5.71-2.14 over their last seven games. The Yankees represent their hardest test so far in the second half so we’ll see if the Cards can keep it up this weekend.
