Opening Odds Analysis

The odds haven’t changed too much on this one as the Yankees opened as -149 favorites and are now going off as -155 favorites in San Diego. Tampa Bay is a +140 underdog, matching the line the Rays closed at in their 9-3 loss back in Game 1. The total has moved up slightly from its opener at 7 runs up to 7.5 runs.

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Gerrit Cole has been excellent this postseason with a 3.46 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched across two playoff starts. The Yankees are 5-0 over Cole’s last five starts and have won all five of those games by at least six runs. Cole will be pitching on just three days’ rest for the first time in his career on Friday.

Tyler Glasnow will be pitching on even less rest after going five innings and throwing 93 pitches against the Yankees in his last trip to the mound in Game 2 on Tuesday night. Glasnow allowed three hits, three walks and four runs in the 7-5 win over New York. Tampa Bay is 10-0 in Glasnow’s last 10 starts.

New York News & Notes

The Yankees lineup around Giancarlo Stanton finally woke up with their backs against the wall in Game 4. New York batted .324 as a team on Thursday night. Gleyber Torres went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs and Luke Voit snapped out of his home run drought with a solo round-tripper in the second inning.

But the real star of the game was the unexpected performance of the pitching staff and bullpen. Jordan Montgomery had a solid start in allowing only one run in four innings pitched. Chad Green, Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman then combined to pitch five innings of no-hit baseball with one walk and seven strikeouts to force this Game 5 on Friday.

Tampa Bay News & Notes

Tampa Bay was 8-1 over its last nine games and was averaging 5.78 runs per game on offense before Thursday night’s three-hit performance. Now the Rays suddenly face elimination and will be up against one of the most feared pitchers in baseball with Gerrit Cole taking the mound.

But on the bright side for Tampa Bay, the Rays used only two relievers in Game 4 as Ryan Yarbrough ate up five innings and Aaron Slegers took the last four outs. Game 5 figures to be another bullpen day for the Rays as Glasnow isn’t likely to go too deep into the game after pitching only three days ago. The Rays will have virtually their entire bullpen at their disposal, as well as Game 1 starter Blake Snell and Game 3 starter Charlie Morton, to try to keep this Yankees lineup in check.

Betting Pick: New York -155

This has been an exciting and unpredictable series that deserves seven games. But it only has this fifth and final game remaining, and with Gerrit Cole on the mound and the superior offense at the plate, the Yankees feel like the right play in Game 5.
