Opening Odds Analysis

The Rays opened as -140 favorites in this matchup, but steady action on the Yankees has moved the line down to Tampa Bay -125. New York is a +105 road underdog on Wednesday while the total is set at 8.5 runs. The UNDER is 4-1 in Tampa Bay’s last five games.

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Nestor Cortes did not pitch particularly well in his last spot start against the Boston Red Sox as he allowed three earned runs and three hits in two innings pitched. Despite the poor outing, Cortes still owns an impressive 1.95 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP in 27.2 innings pitched this season. The left-hander will get his third start of the season against the Rays.

Michael Wacha has led the Rays to a 3-0 record in three July starts with a 4.80 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP across 15 innings pitched. Wacha posted a 6.61 ERA across five appearances in June and a 6.75 ERA in four May games. The right hander holds a 5.16 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP this season in 12 starts and five bullpen appearances.

New York News & Notes

Gio Urshela went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in New York’s 4-3 win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. Urshela returned to the lineup on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox and Aaron Judge made his return on Tuesday after both players spent two weeks on the injured list due to COVID-19 this month.

New York traded a pair of minor-league infielders to acquire right-handed relief pitcher Clay Holmes this week in an attempt to help shore up its bullpen. More moves could be on the way ahead of Friday’s MLB trade deadline as the Yankees enter Wednesday’s action sitting 2.5-games out of a wild card spot in the American League.

Tampa Bay News & Notes

The Rays couldn’t solve Jordan Montgomery on Tuesday night as the Yankees starter held Tampa Bay to five hits and no earned runs in five innings pitched. Tampa Bay clawed back into the game against New York’s bullpen but couldn’t overcome the 3-0 deficit it entered the bottom of the sixth inning with. Brandon Lowe hit his 22nd home run of the season in the loss and went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Tampa Bay has now lost two straight games since going 5-0 over the team’s previous five games. The Rays are 4.5-games ahead of the pack in the AL wild card race, but their focus still remains on the Red Sox at the top of the American League East. Boston currently holds a two-game lead over Tampa Bay for the division lead but the two teams still have 13 head-to-head matchups ahead this season.

Betting Pick: Tampa Bay -125

With Nelson Cortes on the mound, it shouldn’t take Tampa Bay long to get to New York’s shaky bullpen in this one. Look for the Rays to get back in the win column with a strong offensive performance.
