Opening Odds Analysis

The Blue Jays opened as -135 favorites before being bet down slightly to Toronto -119 at home. The Yankees are going off as +109 road underdogs and the total is set at 9 runs since opening at 8.5 runs. The UNDER is 6-2-1 in Toronto’s last nine games.

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Jordan Montgomery allowed eight hits and three earned runs in 5.2 innings pitched last Tuesday in New York’s 8-4 win over the Minnesota Twins. Montgomery has allowed three earned runs or less in eight of his last nine starts and owns a 3.99 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP this season. The Yankees are 6-1 in Montgomery’s last seven starts.

Hyun Jin Ryu has lost each of his last two starts and has allowed nine earned runs in 11.2 innings pitched over that stretch to post a June ERA of 6.94. Despite his rough start to the month, Ryu still holds a rock-solid 3.34 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP on the season. The Blue Jays were 5-1 in Ryu’s previous six starts before those last two losses.

New York News & Notes

Domingo German was torched for seven earned runs in 4.1 innings as the Philadelphia Phillies cruised to a 7-0 win over the Yankees on Sunday. New York fell to 33-32 on the season with the loss and to 4-11 over its last 15 games. Pitching has plagued the Yankees over their current 2-7 slump as the team has allowed 8.43 runs per game over that nine-game stretch.

To make matters worse for the Yankees, Aaron Judge was forced out of action on Sunday due to back spasms. Judge is questionable to return on Tuesday. The Yankees slugger is 4-for-14 over his last three games with four runs and a home run.

Toronto News & Notes

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 2-for-4 with a game-tying home run in the top of the ninth inning on Sunday before the Boston Red Sox went on to score a run in the bottom of the ninth to avoid a sweep with a 2-1 victory. Guerrero has hit a home run in four straight games and is batting .600 over that stretch with four home runs and eight RBIs. The 22-year-old is enjoying a breakout campaign, batting .346 with 22 home runs, 50 runs and 56 RBIs.

Toronto enters this series 8.5 games behind the American League East-leading Tampa Bay Rays and a half-game ahead of the Yankees in the standings. This is going to be a crowded fight for wild-card spots in the American League this season as nine teams are currently at or above .500.

Betting Pick: UNDER 9 runs

Ryu and Montgomery have both been solid this season. Look for both of them to pitch well enough to keep this game close and to keep this score UNDER the posted total.
