The 2017 edition of the Subway Series culminates at Citi Field tonight when the Yankees send out their 23-year-old ace in an attempt to complete the sweep of their New York City rivals. Sportsbooks are high on the Yanks in this one, Sportsbook the Bronx Bombers as -178 moneyline favorites.
Luis Severino had 10 runs hung on him in his last start but he’s still sporting an impressive 3.32 ERA to go along with a 9-5 record in 23 starts this season. Before his implosion against the BoSox, Sev had won four straight decisions and his team had won six straight games when he’d taken the starting bump.
As is the case for many right-handed Yankee pitchers, Severino performs much better on the road. His 2.59 ERA in 12 starts away from Yankee Stadium trails only Chris Sale and Yu Darvish in the American League for the best road ERA.
Given how well the Yankees bullpen has been since the trade deadline, Severino can get a win tonight even in the unlikely scenario that he’s not sharp against a middle-of-the-road offense.
Toeing the other side of the rubber, we’ll see New York native Steven Matz (5.54 ERA) go for his first win since June 28. The Mets have won just one of the southpaw’s last eight starts and the writing is on the wall. If the team won’t let Matz throw his slider, I can’t see him being an effective major leaguer.
