Yankees aim to avoid fourth straight loss vs Phillies

The New York Yankees are coming off a rare series sweep where they were on the losing end of the equation and look to avoid losing four straight games for the first time this season. The Yanks dropped all three games in Tampa Bay and now head to the City of Brotherly Love to open a three-game series vs the Philadelphia Phillies. New York will lean on Jonathan Loaisiga in his third career start, which will mark his first appearance away from Yankee Stadium. The Yankees opened as -135 faves to get back to their winning ways.

SHARK BITES
  • The Yankees haven’t lost four straight games this season.
  • The Phillies have lost four of their last five games with Vince Velasquez starting.
  • The total has gone UNDER in nine of the Yankees’ last 10 games on the road.

YANKEES’ LOSSES HAVE BEEN FEW AND FAR BETWEEN

To put in perspective just how good the New York Yankees have been this season, take a look at their game log. The Yankees have only lost three straight games once this season and have yet to endure four straight losses in 2018. But where the Yanks are falling short is in the batting order as New York is ranked 19th in MLB for runs per game (4.02) in June despite still being second in the majors in home runs in that same span.

The boom-or-bust mentality with New York’s lineup also took a hit over the weekend as catcher Gary Sanchez is expected to land on the DL with a groin strain. That being said, the Yankees are still 15-7 SU in 22 games in June and bettors should stick to their moneyline if they plan to back the Yanks as New York finished 12-10 ATS in those games.

PITCHER MATCHUP MAY BE INCONSEQUENTIAL

The Phillies are sending Vince Velasquez to the mound to try to shut down the Bronx Bombers. Velasquez has not been good in June, yielding 19 hits and 17 earned runs in four starts this month, and it’s no coincidence the Phillies are 1-3 SU in those games and 6-8 SU in his 14 starts this season.

On the flip side, rookie Jonathan Loaisiga has been night and day in his two starts this season, which makes it very difficult to project his performance in this matchup. He threw five scoreless innings vs the Rays in mid-June but struggled in his second start vs the Mariners last week, allowing three earned runs on six hits and an ugly 84 pitches in 3.2 innings. Since both of those games were at home, the rookie may be a non-factor in the outcome tonight but it’s worth noting the Yankees are 2-0 SU and ATS in his two outings.

YANKEES HAVE BEEN VERY PROFITABLE FOR UNDER BETTORS

The total opened at 9 in this tilt and as noted about the Yankees’ offensive woes in June, their recent struggles have been a downpour of profit for totals bettors. The total has gone UNDER in nine of the Yankees’ last 10 games on the road with an average combined score of 5.8 runs per game. In June, the average closing total for Yankees games has been 8.82 so that means when they struggle, get on the UNDER due to the inflated total by sportsbooks.
