Athletics aim for sixth straight win behind Jackson

Edwin Jackson (6-3, 3.18 ERA) has been providing great outings for the Athletics since late June, keeping them in ball games, and they have cashed in on his success. Oakland is 10-1 SU in Jackson’s last 11 trips to the mound, including 4-0 SU on the road over that span. The 35-year-old has allowed two or fewer earned runs in eight of those last 11 starts while surrendering five or fewer hits in nine of those games. On the season, the A’s are 6-1 SU when the righty makes a road start and he has a respectable 3.00 ERA.

This is the second time that Jackson toes the slab against the Mariners lineup this season and he would love to duplicate his previous performance. The Germany native hurled six innings of one-run ball, giving up just three hits in an 8-2 victory in the first trip to the mound vs Seattle. Jackson’s clubs are a perfect 5-0 SU while he sports a sparkling 1.30 ERA over his five career starts vs the Mariners. Additionally, his clubs are 3-0 SU and he has a 1.74 ERA in his three career outings at Safeco Field, though he hasn’t pitched there since 2013.

King Felix has been awful for the M’s this season

The end of the season can’t come soon enough for Felix Hernandez (8-13, 5.46 ERA). Seattle is just 1-9 SU in Hernandez’s last 10 starts dating back to the start of July and the 32-year-old holds a startling 6.14 ERA over that span. Additionally, the Venezuela native has surrendered at least one home run in 11 of his last 12 trips to the mound. The M’s are 6-8 SU through Hernandez’s 14 home starts this year and he holds a middling 4.08 ERA in those outings.

Hernandez gets the ball for the sixth time against Oakland this season, with one of those outings being a relief appearance after James Paxton was injured. The M’s are 1-4 SU in those five previous trips to the mound for Hernandez while he holds a 4.66 ERA, including his relief work in which he tossed 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits in a 3-2 loss. The righty is 26-13 with a 2.78 ERA over his 51 career appearances vs the Athletics.

Runs have been plentiful between the M’s and A’s

Seattle and Oakland have had an average combined score of 14 through the first two games of this series and Sportsbook has tonight’s total Sportsbook at 8.5 runs. Additionally, the two clubs have gone OVER in their last five meetings with an average combined score of 13, scoring 10 or more runs in each game. The total has gone OVER in 12 of Seattle’s last 20 home games, including its last three. Since the start of September, the Athletics have scored the most runs in the majors, 13 more than the second-place Los Angeles Dodgers.

My take on Oakland vs Seattle

If it wasn’t evident above, I like the OVER 8.5 runs in tonight’s matchup. Hernandez has surrendered three or more earned runs in eight of his last 12 trips to the mound, while the A’s have scored the most runs in MLB since September 1. Additionally, Oakland has gone OVER in eight of its last 10 games with an average combined score of 12.3. Lastly, the M’s have gone OVER in five of Hernandez’s last seven starts with an average combined score of 10.14.
