Odds on MLB Teams to Make and Miss the Playoffs

We were just in the early stages of spring training when the COVID-19 pandemic swept the nation and left the 2020 MLB season in flux.
Now, after a three-month pause, we are only days away from the “play ball” call we’ve so desperately been waiting for. MLB and the MLBPA have come to an agreement for a shortened 60-game season that will begin in late July, but how does this impact the odds for your favorite team to make it to the postseason?
That’s where Bovada comes in. The online sportsbook has released odds on every club to either make or miss the postseason this year, with plenty of value across the oddsboard.
While the Los Angeles Dodgers (-450) and New York Yankees (-290) are near locks to play in the postseason, some teams find themselves right on the cusp of EVEN money.

Atlanta Braves: -145 to Make Playoffs
With Atlanta fresh off a 97-win season, oddsmakers are expecting a regression in Georgia. The Braves’ OVER/UNDER projected season win total was sitting at 90.5 as of March 2 and is now set at 34 in the shortened campaign. After a disastrous loss to the Dodgers in Game 5 of the 2019 NLDS, general manager Alex Anthopoulos bolstered the bullpen by signing reliever Will Smith and re-signing Chris Martin and Darren O’Day.
As a result, the Braves’ payroll has swelled to an all-time high. Josh Donaldson and his 37 home runs are with the Minnesota Twins now, but I like the Braves’ odds to get back to the playoffs for the third year in a row at -145 behind a solid young core headlined by Ronald Acuña Jr., Ozzie Albies and the newly signed Marcell Ozuna.
Tampa Bay Rays: -150 to Make Playoffs
The Rays got back to the postseason for the first time since 2013 a year ago and topped the Oakland Athletics in the AL wild-card game before falling in five games to the Houston Astros in the ALDS. With David Price and Mookie Betts gone from the Boston Red Sox, the door is wide open for the Rays to be the main competition to the Yankees in the AL East.
The Rays have proven they can consistently win with their current core, and having one of the best farm systems in baseball certainly doesn’t hurt. The Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays are projected to be afterthoughts in the division, so I really like Tampa Bay to qualify for the playoffs as a wild-card team at the least.
St. Louis Cardinals: +130 to Make Playoffs
The NL Central is as wide open as it’s been in quite some time, and that means there’s plenty of value if you’re backing either the Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds or Milwaukee Brewers to win the division in 2020. That’s translated to this prop as well, as the Cardinals are available at +160 to qualify for the playoffs.
The Reds (-125), Cubs (-130) and Brewers (-180) are all minus-money favorites to miss the postseason, while the Pirates are -775 miss the playoffs. Take the Cards at +130 here.
