Rockies Aim For Fifth Straight Win vs Phillies at Coors Field

The Colorado Rockies were darlings of MLB bettors coming into the season with a lot of action coming in on them to win the NL West and potentially take the World Series. Well, the Rockies’ offense has fallen off a cliff this season even though they’ve won four straight, they’ve only won once in six tries at Coors Field in 2019 with their lone win coming yesterday over the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Rockies opened as -140 faves with a total of 10.5.

STANDOUT STATS

  • Phillies’ righthander Vince Velasquez has had some ups and downs in his career but is off to a decent start in 2019. The fourth-year hurler has made two starts and three outings for the Phillies this season and has been solid by only allowing six hits and three earned runs in 12 innings of work. However, his career ERA vs the Rockies has not been great at 5.23 in six career starts and he gave up six runs on eight hits when he faced them in September last season. In three career starts at Coors Field, Velasquez has owns a 6.14 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP.
  • The Rockies’ will have German Marquez on the mound to face the Phillies and due to the struggles of Kyle Freeland, Marquez has become Colorado’s de facto ace. Marquez was brilliant in his last outing vs the Giants when he pitched a complete game shutout while fanning nine. Three of his four starts have been on the road this year and in those games, he’s only given up six hits and one earned run in 22 innings. However, in his lone home start vs the Braves, he got socked for seven hits and five earned runs. This was also the case last season when he owned a 2.95 ERA in 17 road starts but that figure ballooned to 4.74 in 16 outings at Coors Field. In two starts vs the Phillies’ last season, he gave up 10 hits and six earned runs over 13 innings of work.
  • Although the Phillies have a completely different look to them with all of their offseason signings, they have not historically fared well at Coors Field. Dating back to the start of the 2017 season, the Phillies are 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS while being outscored 59 to 20.
  • The Rockies have won four straight to push their record to 7-12 SU in 19 games this season but that was after enduring a losing stretch that saw them drop 12 of 13. They were shut out three times and scored two or fewer runs in nine games during that span and they rank 25th in MLB in total runs scored (65 runs total). Another alarming trend to start the year is the Rockies’ have only slugged 16 homers so far which is troubling considering they have three players that have hit 30 or more home runs in each of the last two seasons.

My Best Bet for Phillies vs Rockies

Rockies Moneyline -140

The value isn’t spectacular at -140 but I think it’s a safe pick based on how these teams are trending right now. The Phillies have been a great home bet this season at 8-4 SU but they’re 3-3 SU in six road games and got beat by this team last night 6-2. The Rockies’ offense may have come out of hibernation as they’ve scored 23 runs over their last four games and while I know Marquez has historically fell short when pitching at home, I think he’ll do just enough to squeeze out the win. I would steer clear of the total if you aren’t sure of which side to take because these offenses have been very volatile to start the year.
