Phillies – MLB's Most Surprising Bad Team

Aaron Nola

Coming into the Major League Baseball season, the Philadelphia Phillies were at the wrong end of the list in the odds to win the World Series. They were tied with two other teams for the worst odds in the bigs at +15000, but a surprising start has seen them creep up the odds list to +6600, tied with four other teams and ahead of six others.

Although the Phillies are anything but a serious contender, the unexpected start is a welcomed sight for Phillies fans who likely expected the season to be spent in the basement of the National League. Currently 3.5 games out of a Wild Card spot, there’s still plenty of time to regress, but there’s a few spots where the team has excelled.

Somewhat remarkably, the Phillies have been awesome in one-run games, going 14-5 and are perfect so far in extra innings at 4-0. What has killed them this season though is blowout losses, as they’ve already lost nine games by five or more runs.

The key to their success — I think it’s fair to call it that — has been their pitching that ranks in the top 10 in ERA, strikeouts, quality starts and  saves. Last season, they ranked 29th in ERA, 23rd in strikeouts and 28th in quality starts.

The pitching staff has been led by promising 22-year-old Aaron Nola who’s gone 4-4 in 11 appearances with a 2.88 ERA and nine quality starts. Nola’s done his best work on the road this season, posting a 1.58 ERA and a 3-0 record in six starts outside of Philadelphia.

While any type of long term-futures wager on the Phillies would be a waste of your money, they might be a lot closer to contending than anyone would have thought. As for right now, they might be worth a look on a daily moneyline wager depending on the matchup, and you should be cautious about betting against them, especially in parlay situations where you think they might be easy money.

So go ahead Phillies fans and get those 'Philadelphia Phillies 2019 World Series Champions' tattoos before they become too trendy.
