MLB Pitchers Most Run Support Best Bets

Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers has a high ERA of 4.88 on the season, but as he heads into his start on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night his team has scored 5.25 runs per start for the righthander - giving Detroit an 11-9 record in his outings.

Verlander has had some of the most run support in baseball so far this season for pitchers with at least 10 games, with Juan Nicasio (6.79), Chase Anderson (6.00), Jesse Chavez (5.63), Jordan Lyles (5.58), and C.J. Wilson (5.58) leading the way on that list heading into Sunday afternoon's action.

Of those five pitchers Chavez of the Athletics has the best overall team record in his starts at 13-6, thanks also in part to his low 3.14 ERA. Chavez is scheduled to start at home against the Houston Astros on Wednesday night, with teammate Scott Kazmir set to hit the hill on Tuesday night in that series - Kazmir has received 5.42 runs per game of support, also putting him in the top ten of that stats list.

The bottom of the run support list includes another A's pitcher, Jeff Samardzija, with the righthander seeing his teams go just 5-15 in his games thanks to just 2.60 runs per game of support - mostly during his time with the Chicago Cubs prior to being traded before the All-Star Break. Samardzija's ERA on the season is just 2.91.

Danny Duffy of the Royals, who is next scheduled to start on Thursday night at home against the Cleveland Indians, has seen his team go just 5-9 in his starts despite his solid 2.66 ERA on the season - he's getting just 2.86 runs per game of support.

Ian Kennedy of the Padres has a 3.62 ERA over 21 games, but his team is 9-12 in those contests in which he received just 2.86 runs per game of support. Kennedy is next scheduled to pitch on Wednesday night against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
