The Pittsburgh Pirates started this season hot, winning 12 of their first 17 games, and had rivals in the NL Central thinking it might be a four-team race for the division title. But it’s been a downward spiral since for the Pirates, who’ve gone 6-18 SU in 24 games since May 18 and are now eight games back of the division leader. The Bucs will send righty Jameson Taillon to the mound to try to avoid the sweep vs the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight while the D-backs will counter with nominal ace Zack Greinke, who is coming off back-to-back wins for the second time this season.
Greinke might not be having a dominant season but he’s been excellent at home, posting a 1.64 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP in seven starts at Chase Field. But he’s only posted three victories in those appearances as the Diamondbacks’ batting order has only averaged 3.57 runs per game when the hurler heads to the bump.
That being said, Arizona’s offensive woes may be a thing of the past as the team has produced a whopping 51 runs during its last five games and it’s no coincidence that the D-backs are 5-0 SU and against the runline in those tilts. The Diamondbacks -1.5 runline looks more appealing for bettors when you factor in that Arizona is 5-0 ATS in the last five games in this matchup with an average win margin of 2.4 runs per game.
The Pirates may be fade material tonight with Jameson Taillon making his seventh road start of the season. The former No. 2 overall pick has been awful on the road with a 4.13 ERA and 1.31 WHIP and Pittsburgh is 2-4 SU and ATS in his six away game starts. While Taillon can’t shoulder all of the blame, it shouldn’t be a surprise to bettors that the Pirates are 2-8 SU and 4-6 ATS in their last 10 games on the road. The only positive news with Taillon pitching is that he has allowed three runs or less in 10 of his 13 starts, which means a total bet may be the best course of action.
The total opened at 7.5 and an UNDER wager may be profitable. The UNDER has hit in six of Zack Greinke’s last eight games at home with an average combined score of 5.85 runs per game.
