San Diego Looks to Get Back on Track Against Texas

Eric Hosmer's Padres are favored in the San Diego vs Texas odds.

The San Diego Padres are 5-0 in their last five games against Texas since going 1-7 in their previous eight meetings with the Rangers. The Padres will try to break out of a current slump with a road win over the Rangers in Friday night’s series opener in Texas.

Opening Odds Analysis

Early bettors leaned toward the Padres as -170 road favorites to bump the line up to San Diego -175. Texas is now going off at +165 at home while the total has remained steady at 9 runs. The OVER is 6-0 in the last six games between the Padres and the Rangers.

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Joe Musgrove was sensational in his Padres debut last Saturday as he needed only 78 pitches to get through six scoreless innings with three hits, no walks and eight strikeouts. Musgrove pitched well in Pittsburgh last season with a 3.86 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP and 55 strikeouts in 39.2 innings and is hoping to build on that success with San Diego in 2021.

Kohei Arihara pitched six seasons in Japan’s major leagues, compiling a 60-50 record with a 3.74 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. The Rangers signed Arihara to a two-year contract this offseason and believe the 28-year-old will be a pitcher they can build their rotation around. Arihara allowed three runs in five innings against the Kansas City Royals last Saturday in his MLB debut.

San Diego News & Notes

San Diego’s season got off on the right foot when the Padres went 3-0 through their first three games with the offense averaging 6.3 runs per game. But since then, they are just 1-3 and averaging only two runs per game over that stretch. More alarmingly, young superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. has hit the injured list with an injured shoulder.

The Padres made some huge splashes this offseason that included signing Tatis to a massive 14-year contract and bolstering their pitching staff with the additions of Yu Darvish, Blake Snell and Musgrove. San Diego entered the season as one of the favorites to win the World Series, but those lofty goals would take a huge hit if the injury to Tatis winds up being a serious one.

Texas News & Notes

The Rangers got crushed in their first two games of the season, suffering losses of 14-10 and 11-4 to Kansas City to fall to 0-2 out of the gate. Texas has settled down since then to allow only 3.5 runs per game over its last four games, putting together a 3-1 record with a series win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Nate Lowe has been an early breakout star with three home runs, 14 RBIs and a .320 batting average in his first six games in Texas. The Rangers acquired Lowe in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays last season that sent three minor leaguers Tampa Bay’s way. Texas has to be happy with the results of the trade so far.

Betting Pick: Texas +165

San Diego is the superior team from top to bottom, but even great teams go through offensive funks. The price is too sweet to pass up on here with the Rangers playing well and the Padres struggling at the plate.
