Coming off a seven-game homestand (4-3 SU), the San Francisco Giants head to Houston to face the Astros and could be in tough to get a victory tonight. The Giants have been atrocious on the road recently, going 1-6 SU in their last seven away games while being outscored 49-20. And to make matters worse, they get the privilege of having to face Astros right-hander Gerrit Cole, who has been lights-out this season and will be gunning for his first win at Minute Maid Park. Houston opened as an overwhelming -258 favorite to continue the Giants’ road woes.
The Giants will send rookie Andrew Suarez to the bump to try to stifle the World Series champs. But so far this season, he’s been a bit of a train wreck, allowing nine earned runs and 15 hits over his last two starts. It also doesn’t help that he’s gotten almost no run support when he’s pitching as the Giants offense has only averaged 2.8 runs per game in his five starts this season. If bettors are willing to overlook those stats and bet on the upset, they should know the Giants are 8-2 SU in the last 10 games in this matchup and have won five of their last six games in Houston.
On the flip side, Cole is coming off his worst outing of the season (by his standards) as he allowed three runs on five hits vs the Angels last week, and in four home starts he’s gotten an average of three runs of support from the Astros offense. However, the former first overall pick has been a revelation in a Houston uniform with a 1.75 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP in nine starts this season and it’s no coincidence that the Astros are 8-1 SU and 6-3 against the runline when he takes the mound.
The total opened at 7.5 and trends are pointing to an UNDER. The UNDER has hit in seven of the last 10 games in this matchup with an average combined score of 6.5 runs in those contests.
