Giants vs Athletics Betting Odds

The Giants have been automatic against right-handed starters, but are the dogs vs the A's

The Oakland Athletics look to pick up where they left off prior to the all-star break as they welcome the San Francisco Giants to the Oakland Coliseum. The A’s went 15-4 SU prior to the break and look to continue this trend as they send Edwin Jackson to the hill and open as the -120 favorites. Meanwhile, the Giants have won 20 of their last 26 games vs right-handed starts and give the ball to Dereck Rodriguez as they come back at +100. Both starters have been rolling recently, and tonight’s total opened at 9 runs.

Giants Look to Continue Winning ways behind Rodriguez

Although the sample size is still relatively small for Rodriguez (4-1, 2.89 ERA), but all signs are looking good. The rookie has made just seven starts but he holds a 3.12 ERA and the Giants are 6-1 SU over those games. The Texas native has only had one hiccup over those seven outings in which he lasted just 2.2 innings while giving up five earned runs vs the Washington Nationals. This will be Rodriguez’s first career start against an American League club.

The 26-year-old has been the beneficiary of solid run support when he’s on the mound as according to our Pitcher Run Support Page, the Giants are averaging 5.14 runs per game in his starts. Rodriguez will have some work to do if he wants to make it through this game unscathed as Oakland ranks 10th in MLB with a .251 batting average vs righties and are seventh in the majors with a .752 OPS vs RHP.

Jackson impressing since being called up

Jackson (1-1, 2.59 ERA) was signed by the A’s in early June and was called up to the big club to make a start on June 25 and has been solid ever since. Oakland is 3-1 SU in the righties four starts with the one loss coming against the Giants. Jackson pitched well in that game, though, hurling six innings allowing two earned runs on four hits, but the club ran into a true ace in Madison Bumgarner on the other side and took a 7-1 loss.

The Germany native has shown a resurgence with his new club, which is a familiar feeling for him as this is his 13th different team which ties an MLB record. Despite the starting allowing two or fewer runs in each of his starts in 2018, the average combined score of those four outings has been 8.75. The 34-year-old has only made one home start thus far when he allowed two earned runs over 6.2 innings vs the Cleveland Indians on June 30. The Giants are 40-25 SU vs right-handed starters this year, including going 20-6 over their last 26 games. San Francisco also has the fourth-best batting average vs RHP in the majors at .257.

Is the UNDER the Bet to Make?

Sportsbook has tonight’s total Sportsbook at 9 runs and with the recent success of the two starting pitchers, all signs point to the UNDER. The Giants have gone UNDER in eight of their last nine road games with an average combined score of 6.22 and have gone UNDER in their last 10 games in which the total closed at 8.5 runs or more. In Rodriguez’s seven starts, only once has San Francisco gone OVER 9 runs, similarly, Oakland hasn’t gone OVER 9 runs in any of Jackson’s four starts.
