American League Cy Young Candidate Dallas Keuchel was a lock to make the start for the Houston Astros in their win-or-go-home Wild Card game against the New York Yankees Tuesday. Despite Keuchel’s phenomenal pitching this season he will be taking the mound at Yankee Stadium on three-days rest for the first time in his career.
Since 1995, there have been 78 pitchers to start the Wild Card game on short rest. Those 78 pitchers have combined for a 4.59 ERA with their teams posting a 31-47 record.
Pitchers in the postseason on short rest have obviously not been able to go as deep into games either. Since 2004 there have been 23 pitchers that have made a start on short rest with only one pitching seven innings and allowing two or fewer earned runs.
- Houston Astros -115
- New York Yankees -105
