Can The Cardinals Break Out Of Their Swoon in Atlanta?

After getting off to a hot start, the St. Louis Cardinals look to be in a funk. They’ve dropped 10 of their last 13 games and will lean on Adam Wainwright to right the ship tonight vs the Atlanta Braves. The Braves counter with Julio Teheran, who owns a 3.00 ERA in three home starts this season, but Atlanta has been hit-or-miss at Turner Field with an 11-11 SU record in 22 games in Georgia.

The Braves opened as slight -105 favorites with a total of 10.

Standout Stats

  • Adam Wainwright gets the start for the Cardinals and although he’s past his prime, he’s still serviceable at 37. The righty is coming off a tough home loss vs Pittsburgh when he threw seven innings and only allowed one earned run. However, that hasn’t carried over to the road as he owns a 5.91 ERA in four starts this season and has given up five home runs in those outings.
  • The Braves will lean on Julio Teheran to shut down the Cardinals and he’s been much better at home than on the road this season. He owns a 3.00 ERA in three starts at Turner Field and the one glaring stat that stands out is he’s allowed four home runs in those outings. In his lone start vs the Cardinals last season, he threw a gem by allowing only two hits and no earned runs over six innings.
  • The Cardinals offense has been crushing right-handers this season and they rank near the top of some major offensive categories when facing righties. They rank third in MLB in batting average (.264), fourth in total runs scored (180), first in total hits (315) and fourth in total RBIs (169).
  • Atlanta’s bullpen has not been great this season as it ranks 21st in MLB in ERA (4.51) and 20th in opponent batting average (.247). The relievers are also tied for fifth in MLB in blown saves (6) and rank 26th in MLB in strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.85).
  • After a strong start to the season, the Cardinals have taken a bit of a nosedive in the standings. They’ve gone 3-10 SU and 5-8 against the runline in that span while scoring one run or less in seven of those games. That includes last night’s result when they were shut out 4-0 vs the Braves.
  • A lot of UNDER trends coming into this matchup with it hitting in Julio Teheran’s last four starts and in three of Adam Wainwright’s last four starts. The UNDER has also hit in four of the Braves’ last six games.

My Best Bet for Cardinals vs Braves

UNDER 10

This one may come back to bite me because Adam Wainwright and Julio Teheran are known to have outings where they give up 5+ earned runs but I’m willing to roll the dice on this one mainly because of how poorly the Cardinals have been at the plate lately.

The Cards have stars through the entire batting order but can’t seem to put runs on the board and I’m riding with that trend in this one mainly because of how high this total is. If this was lower than 10, I’d stay away from the total and side with the underdog Cardinals just because of the value.

The Cardinals are 3-10 SU and 5-8 ATS in their last 13 games.away The Braves bullpen ranks 21st in MLB in ERA (4.51).home The UNDER has hit in Julio Teheran’s last 4 starts. home
