Astros Favored With Martes Making his First MLB Start

The Rangers won their fifth straight game last night with the help of two home runs from Rougned Odor and they'll call upon Andrew Cashner (3-5, 3.17 ERA) this evening in their series finale with the Astros. Losing streaks haven’t happened often this season for the MLB-leading Astros but another tally in the loss column tonight would give them their longest of such streaks this season.

SHARK BITES
  • The Rangers are 6-0 SU and on the runline in their last 6 games on the road.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 6 of the Rangers' last 7 games when closing out a series.
  • Francis Martes had an ERA of 5.29 ERA in 8 Triple-A starts before being called up.

Francis Martes will make his first major league start this evening and he’ll do it looking to help the Astros avoid a home sweep at the hands of Rangers. The top prospect made his MLB debut in a relief appearance for the ‘Stros last week and he was knocked around for four runs over 3.2 innings.

Andrew Cashner, however, has been excellent this season. That’s not something that could be said about the righty over the last few years but he’s gone seven innings allowing two or fewer runs in three of his last five starts. That said, he was blown up by the Astros earlier this month and he’s always prone to another explosion.

The Astros are massive faves tonight but with a relative unproven prospect going to the mound, that seems like a bit of a risky play. Given how the Rangers have been playing on the road, they should probably be considered as underdogs.
