Blue Jays Were Rough on Kevin Gausman in 2016

Buck Showalter and the Orioles will get their 2017 season started against the same team that ended their 2016 season when they host the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon. Marco Estrada (9-9, 3.48 ERA in 2016) will have the honor of starting the Jays’ opener and he’ll be looking to help his team break a five-game losing streak on Sportsbook Day as he squares off with Kevin Gausman (9-12, 3.61 ERA in 2016).

SHARK BITES
  • The Blue Jays are 0-4 SU in their last 4 games as underdogs against the Orioles.
  • The Orioles are 4-1 SU and ATS in their last 5 games after losing the previous game in a matchup.
  • Kevin Gausman had a 2.67 ERA and lost just 2 decisions in 12 starts at Camden Yards in 2016.

Estrada started four games against the O’s last season and fared pretty well, coming out with a 2-0 record and a 3.00 ERA while limiting batters to a .213 average through 24.0 innings. He did, however, get banged around in spring training, coming away from Dunedin with a 4.76 ERA.

With an 0-2 record and 7.04 ERA in three starts against the Jays last season, Gausman fared much worse against his team’s Sportsbook Day opponents in 2016 than Estrada did. Toronto has added some lefties to the lineup so the right-handed fifth-year starter could have another rough year against the Jays.

Toronto and Baltimore’s last matchup was a contentious one and with Jose Bautista deciding to remain with the Jays in the offseason, it’s likely this rivalry remains very real in 2017.
