New York’s not quite out of the AL East race just yet. They’ll have to win their final two games – and the Red Sox will have to lose out – but with how Yanks are hitting the baseball, it’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility.
Toronto will try to spoil the party for their division rivals as it’s all they have left to play for and they’ll send their best pitcher – Marcus Stroman – to the bump in the effort. Stroman (13-8, 3.06 ERA) is third among American League pitchers in Wins Above Replacement (5.83) but he’s struggled in four starts against the Yanks this year, giving up 12 total earned runs.
In the last seven days (eight games) the Yankees have hit 17 home runs and they’re slugging an incredible .881 as a team. They’re pitching, however, hasn’t been quite up to snuff and Jaime Garcia was rocked when he faced the Jays in his last start just under a week ago.
No matter your allegiance, today’s action is must-watch baseball. New York’s motivation to usurp the Red Sox gives them an intangible edge that has to be taken into account when handicapping this contest.
