Starting Pitchers
Frankie Montas (4-9) picked up his second straight no-decision last time out as he allowed two hits and two earned runs against the Boston Red Sox on August 13. The right-hander owns a 3.59 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP over 112.2 innings of work this season.
Jose Berrios (8-5) was hammered for eight hits and eight earned runs over just four innings in his last start on August 12 against the Cleveland Guardians – his first loss since June 26. The Blue Jays starter owns a 5.61 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP over 122 innings.
Stripling Perfect Through Six As Blue Jays Snap Skid
Toronto halted a three-game slide on Wednesday, defeating the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 in their series finale. The game was scoreless until the seventh inning when George Springer recorded his 1,000th career hit on an RBI single. Santiago Espinal and Alejandro Kirk followed up with two-run doubles to blow the game wide open. Ross Stripling was perfect until Cedric Mullins singled on the first pitch of the seventh inning.
The Blue Jays looked like the favorites to take the top spot in the AL wild-card race but have fallen back into the pack after their recent struggles. Toronto now occupies the third and final spot, 1.5 games back of the Seattle Mariners and just one game ahead of the Minnesota Twins.
Donaldson Hits Walk-Off Grand Slam To Complete Comeback
It was a dramatic finish at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night as the home team walked off the Tampa Bay Rays in the 10th thanks to a grand slam from Josh Donaldson. Trailing 4-0 going into the sixth, the Yankees hit two home runs and got a based-loaded walk to tie the game and force extras. Francisco Mejia hit a three-run bomb to put the Rays up again in the 10th, setting the stage for Donaldson’s heroics that snapped New York’s three-game losing streak.
Wednesday’s win marked just the third time this month that the Yankees have scored at least eight runs in a game. New York is averaging just 3.60 runs per game in August – way down from the club’s season mark of 5.13, which still ranks second in the majors despite their recent slump.
Blue Jays vs Yankees Pick & Insights
Blue Jays: Keys To Victory
Like the Yankees, the offense has been dry for the Blue Jays, especially over the last week or so. Prior to last night’s win, Toronto had scored just 1.60 runs per game over its previous five contests. Outside of Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who have nine RBIs apiece this month, the Blue Jays haven’t had much offensive production – that’ll need to change moving forward.
Yankees: Keys To Victory
The Yankees have been needing an offensive spark and they may have finally got it from Donaldson on Wednesday night. The third baseman now leads the club with 12 RBIs in August, though there hasn’t been much offensive support around him outside of Aaron Judge (4 HR, 10 RBI). That duo will need to keep driving the offense if New York is going to stay in the win column.
