Roughing up the recently rehabilitated Steven Matz in his second start of the season, the Nationals’ lumber stayed hot and Washington increased its massive lead in the National League East with a 7-2 win in Game 2 of a four-game set with the misery Mets.
The Mets may sit 10.5 games back of the division lead in the NL East but at least they get to face Stephen Strasburg today. Actually, that’s not good either. Stras is 7-4 with a 2.64 ERA in 13 career starts against the Mets and made them look silly last year, striking out 30 New York batters in his three outings vs the Mets in which he went 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA.
He is, however, coming off a performance in which he gave up three long bombs in an 11-10 loss to the belligerent Braves and his team has lost two straight games when he’s taken the bump.
Stopping the Nats’ offense is something not many pitchers have been able to do this season but it’s something Mets’ starter Seth Lugo was able to do in his lone career start against the division rivals. In that outing, the then rookie Lugo spun seven innings of six-hit, one-run ball in a 5-1 Mets’ win.
Washington will (obviously) be the heavy road chalk but with the mighty Strasburg on the hill and an offense that’s averaged 7.4 runs per game this week, they’re more than playable.
