Losing the first three in their four-game set with the NL East-leading Nationals, the Mets will send Jacob deGrom to the hill looking to salvage something from this series. New York is favored in the series finale but only because of their starter’s pedigree. The Nats have owned the Mets in every aspect this weekend and deGrom will have to spin a gem if the hometown team is going to have a chance.
Incredibly inconsistent this year, deGrom is coming off a complete-game win against the Cubs in which he allowed just one run on six hits. He is, however, just one game away from an explosion as he’s been tagged with 16 earned runs over his last three starts.
Joe Ross, brother of recently revived Tyson Ross, will pitch for the Nats today looking to overcome some inconsistency himself. The 24-year-old Ross has some of the best stuff in the bigs but has trouble with his command and tends to leave too much over the plate. With both the starters today possessing the talent to go deep but also the propensity to implode, you’re likely best off avoiding a total and grabbing either side.
That being said, the Nationals are now 8-2 straight up in their last 10 games against the Mets and Washington’s offense has been on fire of late. It’s tough to fade them when they’re being offered at underdog value.
