Why you Shouldn’t Bet the Cubs to Win WS

As it stands today, the Chicago Cubs are on pace to set the record for most wins in a 162 game season, along with the second best winning percentage of all-time. They’re also massive +350 favorites to win the World Series, with the next closest team coming in at +900. To put their World Series futures odds in perspective, the odds of the favorite to win the World Series at this time last year (the Dodgers) were almost double at +600.

Any value to bet the Cubs is out the window, but even if the value was there, I’d recommend you pass. The reason is simple, as it’s rare in Major League Baseball that the team with the best regular season record ends up as the World Series Champions. It’s only happened six times over the last 30 years to be exact, and only once in 30 years for a National League team.

I’m not saying it won’t happen, as it’s obviously been done before, but the field has a whopping .800 win percentage over the best regular season team since 1986.

We’re still four and half months away from the playoffs, and anything can happen between now and then but you’d be best served to temper your expectations, and maybe more importantly, keep your wallet in your pocket if you’re thinking of going all-in on the Cubs.

Here’s a look at the six teams from the last 30 years to finish the season with the best regular season record and a World Series win:
