2019 NBA Draft Props: Will Ja Morant Go 2nd Overall?

NBA 2019 Draft Props May 2019

In the most dramatic NBA draft lottery in years, the New Orleans Pelicans won the right to draft Zion Williamson with the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. But who will be selected second? Oddsmakers have a few candidates in mind but have Murray State’s Ja Morant as the odds-on favorite to be taken second overall.

Online sportsbook BetOnline has Morant at -200 to go second overall in the 2019 NBA Draft followed by RJ Barrett (+150), Zion Williamson (+1000), Jarrett Culver (+1200) and De’Andre Hunter (+1400) to round out the field.

Odds Shark will add more NBA draft props as they become available so keep checking back on this page from now till the draft.

Will Morant Be Taken with the Second Pick?

If the Grizzlies are smart, they will run to the podium as soon as Williamson’s name is called for the first pick and turn in their selection to get Ja Morant. Morant’s style of play is so well-suited for the NBA that some draft experts are comparing him to Russell Westbrook due to his athleticism and ability to run the point. He would also be decent as an off-ball guard to pair with Mike Conley in Memphis. But that’s the kicker. Do the Grizzlies envision a backcourt going forward with Conley and Morant?

This is why Morant going second isn’t a lock because the Grizzlies may think that Duke’s RJ Barrett may be a better fit on the wing and add a scoring punch for a team that was the lowest-scoring in the NBA last season (103.5 points per game). I personally think that would be a dumb decision by the Grizz but GMs aren’t exactly known for making the best decisions come draft time (see Luka Doncic in 2018).

If a betting case was to be made for any other player to be taken second, it would be for Barrett. The “other” Duke freshman has gotten polarizing reviews from draft analysts due to his poor shooting in college but he was the all-time leading scorer for a freshman in the ACC this season. He also played in much tougher games throughout the year compared to Morant, who played only three games vs ranked teams all season. I don’t buy it and the odds at +150 just reinforce my feelings about Barrett going No. 2 overall.

What do you think? Do you think Ja Morant goes second overall? Or will Barrett or Culver be the choice? Have your say in the comments.
