Celtics vs. Nuggets

NBA Championship Odds 2023-24: Celtics, Nuggets On Finals Collision Course

Early results from the first round of the 2024 NBA playoffs haven't created a noticeable shift in the odds for which team will hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy this June.

As things stand, the Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets remain the heavy favorites to win it all, with no other team having greater than 14-to-1 odds.

Leading the way: Boston Celtics, +130

The path to a league-best 18 championships has essentially turned into a walk in the park, kicked off against a Miami Heat team missing Jimmy Butler for the entire series.

We've reached the point now where a single loss at the hands of an Eastern Conference opponent throughout the remainder of the postseason would be viewed as a monster upset. Boston is in a tier of its own, and probably won't be tested until squaring off with the best of the West.

Two in a row: Denver Nuggets, +210

Death, taxes, and the Nuggets beating the Los Angeles Lakers. Make that 10 wins in a row by the reigning champions against their purple and gold counterparts, both across the regular season and postseason dating back to 2022.

Both victories in Games 1 and 2 required noticeable comebacks, but it's a testament to the perseverance and dedication of a team not resting on its laurels that Denver managed to pull out a pair of home wins as the series heads to Crypto.com Arena.

NBA Championship Betting Strategy

Much of what formulates odds for NBA title contenders obviously stems from regular-season success.

The reason why the Celtics and Nuggets continue to be the commanding favorites is that they've been near the top of the standings for pretty much the entire year, leaving oddsmakers no other choice but to give them such strong positioning.

What Impacts NBA Championship Odds?

  • Winning and losing streaks

The last team to win consecutive championships was the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018. That capped off a 10-year run in which only five different teams (Warriors, Lakers, Mavericks, Cavaliers, and Spurs) won a title.
