The Spurs have gone five-straight years without qualifying for the postseason. Prior to this stretch of mediocrity, the franchise went consecutive years sans a playoff berth just once, and that was when it competed in the ABA during just its third and fourth years in existence.
Chris Paul, a 12-time All-Star and future Hall of Famer, was brought on not as a means to end that streak immediately, but to set up Wembanyama and the rest of San Antonio's young core for future success with his veteran guidance.
Best Bet: None ... yet
With the summer additions of Harrison Barnes at the wing along with the "point god," combined with another full year of Wembanyama coming off a solid showing in Paris during the Olympic Games for his home nation, the Spurs have the resources intact to undoubtedly be greater than they were. To be fair, though, the bar is incredibly low, and there's plenty of room for growth.
The combination of Paul running the offense with the legendary Gregg Popovich on the sidelines is one of the greatest meeting of the minds we've ever seen. They're basketball genius' in their own right, but together, they'll be such a blessing for a young core raring to climb the standings in the Western Conference.
Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will the Spurs' eventual turnaround. Progress can be a slow process, so no one in their right mind should put money down on this team winning a title, the conference, or even the division this early in the rebuild. Moving forward, though, barring this season going in the dumps beyond all reason, San Antonio will be difficult to ignore.
San Antonio Spurs' 2024-25 NBA Win Total, Make Playoffs Odds
Team | 2024-25 Win Total | OVER | UNDER | Odds To Make Playoffs |
---|---|---|---|---|
San Antonio Spurs | 35.5 | -122 | +100 | +350 |
Odds as of October 8, 2024
San Antonio finished the 2023-24 regular season with the fifth-worst overall record at 22-60, which was identical to the season prior. The last time the Spurs had a winning percentage weaker than .268 was in 1996-97 (.244), which resulted in the team landing the first overall pick in that summer's draft and was used on Tim Duncan, leading to five Larry O'Brien trophy wins.
Best Bet: UNDER 35.5 Wins, -122
Ending the 2024-25 campaign with 36 or more victories would mean the Spurs would need to win 14 more games in one fell swoop. The biggest year over year improvement by a team last season was the Houston Rockets, going from 22-60 to an even 41-41 for a difference of .232, so it's certainly doable.
While it's not impossible for the Spurs to make a similar leap themselves, it's still asking a great deal of them very quickly. Paul will be 40 years of age by the end of the season, and who knows if Wembanyama is going to miss an extended period after sitting 11 games his rookie year.

The Spurs went winless in West Group C at 0-4 during the inaugural in-season tournament. They don't have the worst odds to emerge from West Group B this year, as that falls upon the Utah Jazz, but getting through the Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns, and the reigning Cup winners in the Los Angeles Lakers won't be easy.

Best Bet: Victor Wembanyama For Defensive Player Of The Year, -160
Seriously, take your pick with Wembanyama when it comes to end-of-season hardware since he's the betting favorite for two awards in Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved Player, and 21-to-1 odds for Most Valuable Player isn't anything to scoff at either.
The 7-foot-4 Frenchman finished second in voting for the 2024 Defensive Player of the Year while taking home Rookie of the Year honors, which nearly made Wembanyama the first player to take home both awards in the same year. Beyond Rudy Gobert anchoring the best defense across the Association with the Minnesota Timberwolves, there was very much a debate to be had over whether or not Wembanyama deserved to recognized for his defensive chops.
He led all players in rejections with 3.6 per game, which was 1.2 more than the second-ranked Walker Kessler. With his quickness and stature at his position, no player can say they're more imposing a presence in the paint and even beyond it than Wembanyama.
Voters may lean towards picking a player who isn't in their second year for Most Improved, and the list of viable candidates for MVP is long and strong. Minus money isn't usually enticing enough for bettors, but that number will fluctuate over time, so it's all about striking while the iron is hot.
