The most lopsided series of the NBA playoffs continues tonight when the San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies collide in Tennessee for Game 3. Sportsbooks opened the Grizzlies as 3.5-point home underdogs with a total of 184.5.
After hammering Memphis in the first two games, the Spurs are looking like a well-oiled machine right now. Kawhi Leonard has been stellar, averaging 34.5 points on a ridiculous 20-of-28 shooting from the field while knocking down all 28 free-throw attempts. He’s on pace to obliterate his previous best scoring postseason of his career (22.5 points per game), which was set last year.
The Grizzlies have been simply overmatched vs the high-flying Spurs, scoring just 82 points in each of the defeats in San Antonio. While Memphis head coach David Fizdale had a point in his epic post-game rant after Game 2 about the officiating (Leonard had more free-throw attempts than the entire Grizzlies team), it wasn’t the only reason for the loss. I’m not sure if the Grizzlies have what it takes to go toe to toe with the Spurs, which makes the San Antonio -3.5 line appealing in my eyes.
Backing the favorites to win straight up has been a very profitable play when the Spurs and Grizz get together, evidenced by favorites going 14-1 SU in the last 15 meetings between the squads.
